Title

Trends in PhD Students Enrollment - A Study of Top and Bottom Five States/Union Territories in India

Abstract

Education offers various economic benefits and contributions to the society. Education brings economic stability to any society. Higher education is the key factor in shaping the skilled human resource. Higher Education provides an opportunity to critically reflect upon the cultural, economic, moral, social, and spiritual issues facing humanity. It underwrites to national development through the spreading of specialized knowledge and skills. Development and progress of the citizens of the country are defined by the knowledge society and skilled manpower. The importance of higher education has been pointed out by the International Commission on Education for the 21st Century. Consistent growth has been recorded in higher education in India for the last two decades, which has been able to generate skilled manpower for the rapid industrialization and knowledge based economy. According to All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2017-2018, in undergraduate level programmes about 79.2 per cent students are enrolled, whereas only less than 0.5 per cent of the total students are enrolled in the Ph.D. programme. In all India level only 3.6 per cent colleges run Ph.D. programme. This Study includes only top and bottom five states/union territories’ student enrollment in PhD level in India. Tamil Nadu is the top state in PhD level enrollment of students, followed by Utter Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are stood remaining top four places. Other side, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the last state in PhD level enrollment of students, followed by Goa, Tripura, Sikkim, and Nagaland are stood remaining bottom four places.
