Title

Self-Access Language Learning (SALL) – Will Classrooms become Self-Access Language Learning Centres in India?

Abstract

Self-Access Language Learning (SALL) is learning a language through the use of a self-contained learning environment which provides an independent study programme with readily accessible materials, makes available a form of help -- either through answer keys or through counselling, and possibly offers the latest technology (Dickinson, 1987). That is, students are offered an environment in which they are active participants rather than passive recipients of information. Self-Access Language Learning (SALL) system is now becoming popular in many countries where Self-Access Learning Centres are established rapidly. In such an atmosphere studying the language has become an activity, an enjoyable activity which has replaced the established theoretical frameworks. In a nation like India where the learners are more used to learning a language in a classroom atmosphere with the help of the teacher, how feasible it is to introduce SALL is a big question. The paper tries to analyse this with giving proper explanation to what is SALL and also scrutinizing its advantages and disadvantage.
