India is a country of rare art forms including music, dance and paintings. Even in the Indus Valley time, there were some paintings found in the walls and seals. The Ajanta paintings and the Mughal paintings are the masterpieces of Indian paintings and even called as the classical paintings of the world. Like that, the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma of Travancore royal family got wide range of appreciation because of its asthetic sense and its comprehensive finishing. Most of Ravi Varma’s paintings depict the contemporary situations in general and the emotions of women of the age in particular. In this article the authors have taken an effort to bring out the asthetic importance of Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings and its place in the Art History of India.
