Crime has been an integral part of the society since advent of the existence of mankind. During early human civilization, there were no laws to control human behaviour. A lawless society gradually brought in law and order issues due to increase in commission of crimes. With the passing of time, a need was felt to curb and control criminal activities of people by making rules of conduct for administration of justice. Since ancient times, various ways and techniques were adopted in the form of Dharma or rules laid down by the sovereign authority, in order to administer justice to the victims against whom the crimes were committed. This paper contextualises the idea of criminal justice system and its development in India. The two different types of criminal justice system prevalent in the world is highlighted in this paper with an emphasis on criminal justice system in India. An attempt is made to study the existence of criminal justice system in Ancient, Mughal, British and Post-independence period. The various component parts of criminal justice system which comprises of investigating agencies, judiciary and correctional institution along with their functions is analysed and suggestions are made to improve and strengthen the current criminal justice system in India.
