Title

Bhagavad Gita : Its Role in Transforming Youth Problems

Abstract

Bhagavad Gita is the magnum opus among all the philosophical works written till date in India. The literal meaning of the book is "song of the lord". This book reflects the core levels of knowledge related to all aspects of life; it is a narration of how Krishna (Parmatma) teaches Arjun (Jeeva) the real philosophy of life. He teaches this in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, where Arjuna drops his weapons seeing all his blood relatives in front of him. By the medium of this beautiful narration, Krishna gives a message to the whole mankind that when we face the toughest times of our life, we need to give in the best rather than leaving or escaping the situation. Youths of India do exactly the opposite of this. Number of suicides among the youth has risen to 63.5% between the year 1990 to 2013, and overall it has increased to 10.3% from 7.9% in last two decades with the young adults between the ages of 20-24 years are worst hit by such negative thoughts. Such steps are taken due to lack of communication with a good learned mentor who could have guided them and also sometimes due to generation gap which is built with our parents. They do not have a role model to look up to in the state of turmoil and negativity. Social scientists are now very close to establishing the fact that to lead a combative and healthy life style, a person should have a good Spiritual Quotient or SQ as compared to IQ and EQ. Gita is not a religious scripture as misinterpreted by many, rather it is the ultimate and easiest way of enhancing our spiritual growth by doing our work selflessly without worrying about its result. This paper tends to highlight the role of theoretical models for Indian youths who can be benefited and actively engaged in spiritual quotient owing to the knowledge gained by Bhagavad Gita. A greater awareness with these models can help youths deal and cope with problems of their lives in an optimistic manner. Also a few renowned personalities who are influenced by Bhagavad Gita are also included in the paper so as to create a better impact upon the youths. Index Terms: Bhagavad Gita, Spiritual quotient, Youth, Theoretical Models, Philosophy of Life.
