Title

IMPLEMENTATION OF 3D ARCHITECTURE TO OPTIMIZE COMPRESSION AND DECOMPRESSION OF AN IMAGE USING DWT AND ANN

Abstract

Image compression and decompression is one of the major image processing techniques that is widely used in medical, automotive, consumer and military applications. The main focus with in the development of the design is on providing a high in operation frequency and a little range of clock cycles together with economical hardware utilization by maximizing the inter-stage and intra-stage computational parallelism for the pipeline. The inter-stage parallelism is enhanced by optimally mapping the computational task of multi decomposition levels to the stages of the pipeline and synchronizing their operations using 7th and 8th order LPF and HPF filters to remove noise signal. Continuous Discrete wavelet transforms (CDWT) is the most popular transformation technique adopted for image compression and decompression. In this work a modified Distributive Arithmetic based DWT using CDWT and artificial neural network (ANN) like multilayer perception (MLP) and back propagation (BP) architecture is proposed and it is designed using digital image processing. The sigmoid function is used in MLP and BP to threshold the compression the image and ANN mean square error will be reduced using back propagation by changing input weights. The modified approach consumes area of 6% on and optimized compression ratio (CR), SNR, PSNR and MSE. The modified DA-DWT and CDWT architectures has a latency of 44 clock cycles and a throughput of 4 clock cycles. This design is twice faster than the reference design and is thus suitable for applications that require high speed image processing algorithms.
