Title

Comparative Study of Seismic Performance of SMRF, Dual System and Shear wall dominating system

Abstract

Seismic performance of Multi-storey buildings is always a subject of interest for a structural engineer. The paper focuses on comparison of seismic response of different RC lateral load resisting system. Selection of a particular type of lateral load resisting system depends upon seismic risk of the zone and economy. The different lateral load resisting systems are special moment frame system, structural wall system, dual system and shear wall dominant system. A three dimensional P+10 RC building is selected for analysis. The selected building is analyzed by using ETABS 2015 for two zones i.e. zone III and zone IV, which covers major part of Indian seismic zone. Linear dynamic analysis is performed. The structural performance of each system is compared in terms of base shear, storey displacement, inter-storey drift, time period. Based on these results, it can be concluded that shear wall dominant system has boosted the structural performance compared to other systems. In this system vertical load carrying members are only RC structural walls and floor system consists of flat plate. It is very effective system for medium to high rise structures for repeated plans. It is very essential to control displacement and specifically inter-storey drift because they are the main cause of damage to the structure. For shear wall dominant system storey displacement and inter-storey drift values are very less compared to other systems. This system has increased the inelastic capacity of the structure. And thus it reveals that shear wall dominant system as better earthquake resistant system compared to other systems.
