Title

Education Philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi: A Historical Perspective

Abstract

Although Gandhi had no xenophobia towards the British, yet he wanted the prevailing colonial education system established by the British to be reframed on two accounts: firstly to help India to move away from the Western concept of progress about which he had, always, been skeptical and secondly to follow an education system which would be best suited and far more viable for a different kind of development as suited to India’s needs .So he evolved a system of education which, may be further categorized as :Basic Education (Buniyadi Talim) ; Nayi Talim ; National Education and Life Education . All these systems of education stood on the same ‘Three Pillars’ which laid stress on the lifelong character , the social character and form a holistic process . According to ‘Basic Education’, the school, itself, was a workshop where we would learn while we earn and vise-versa while in ‘Nai Talim’ “knowledge and work were inseparable”.
