Title

A Novel Multi-Stage Multilevel Inverter Topology for the Induction Motor Drive

Abstract

Multilevel voltage source converters are emerging as a new breed of high-power applications power converter options. The voltage converters on multi-level usually synthesize the voltage staircase wave from many levels of dc capacitor stress. The voltage difference between different levels is one of the key drawbacks of the multilevel converters. Usually voltage clamping or capacitor charge control is needed for the balancing of voltage between different rates. Multilevel converters offer several ways of achieving voltage balance. This paper presents a three-phase multilevel inverter coupled with the induction machine to evaluate the motor performance characteristics output. The multi-level topology is formed by several serial H-bridge cells, each connected with a string. Instead of eight active switches required in traditional H-bridge multi-level inverters, the simplified multilevel inverter requires only six active switches. Furthermore, the line frequency is operated by two active switches. The studied topology provides several benefits, such as better waveforms, smaller filter size and lower electromagnetic interference and total distortion of harmonics. Finally, propose an asymmetrical configuration of seven levels and six switches.
