Title

A study of Eco critical Vision of Amitav Ghosh in The Glass Palace

Abstract

Ecological degradation is an important issue in the 21st century. The human centric approach and commercialization of natural resources has disturbed the balance of ecosystem and environment. Human has been exploiting the environment for his comfort that is very dangerous for not only nature but human also. Now a days it is hot issue on which every branch of knowledge has focused. Literature has also spread its study and talks about environment and other non-living things. Now many scholars have given the significant place to the nature in their literary works. The Glass Palace is also an important novel which focuses on the environmental issue. It delineates that human is responsible for the destruction of environment. Due to greediness and dominance over nature, human becomes so powerful that he destroys everything for his benefits. Besides environmental degradation being a major issue of the The Glass Palace, the novel also deals with themes such as war, migration, exile, history, and colonial exploitation. Focusing on British invasion in Burma, Ghosh raises the question about nature’s exploitation by the colonisers and local people in the form of teak and rubber trade and depicts the conflict between humans and the environment. He also portrays animal exploitation and killing of birds by humans for their personal needs. The writer tries to delineate the oppression of man by man, environment by man, and reject the cruelty of man over animals for their greed. He is conscious for the non-human “other” and speak for their equal rights and protection as human beings themselves possess.
