Title

Zadie Smith’s ‘Swing Time’: A novel exploring Black race in unique perspectives.

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to research mainly the black race and their experiences relating to the white race through the unique perspectives used by British writer Zadie Smith in her acclaimed novel, Swing Time. This paper also aims to research the issues of coloured people and their relation to the Performing Arts like Dance, Fame and to the idea of Development. Smith has also used the theme of conflict between races and conflict between friendships, which will also be outlined. Swing Time is the novel which uses the multiple countries to set its plot including London, New York and Western Africa. Smith has used the medium of dance and movies to outline the condition of the Black race. Swing Time which Observer has revived as ‘Smith’s finest [novel], Truly marvellous, so extraordinary. Has brilliant things to say about race, class and gender’ is one of the most praised novel for the various ways it deals with the black race. Swing Time is also about the problem faced by the people of colour. It deals with their pursuit to know their identity and where they belong, as well as the resulting torment. It is about the tow mixed race girls who have parents of two different races. It deals with the conflict that occurs between them as they have mothers of different races. It deals about the pure caring friendship that is ruined by the unnecessary issues like different raced parents, talent and attitude. Hence Los Angeles Times perfectly calls it, ‘A thrilling multilayered Tour de Force.’ Zadie Adeline Smith, who is a the Fellow of the Royal Society of London, writes most of her novels based in London but in Swing Time, she has widened her scope to include more places to outline the varied picture of coloured people. Smith was born on 25th October 1975, to the Caribbean mother and British father. Besides being the most acclaimed young diasporic novelist of the 21st century she is also the acclaimed essayist and short story writer. Audrey Lorde writes, ‘It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept and celebrate those differences,’ and Smith has also suggested the same thing throughout the novel for suggesting the idea Lorde, she uses the Dance which is different in different races but it celebrates the difference and equalises every kind of discrimination human has impose on human.
