Title

Laser Cladding of Hydroxyapatite on metals for Bio Implant- an Overview

Abstract

Surface modification of an implant with a bimaterial is used to improve its biocompatibility and to reduce post implant complications. Biomaterials are best suited to the function that they perform with the help of a complex hierarchical structure. In this work hydroxyapatite powder is first pre-placed on Ti6Al4Vsubstrate and melting is accomplished with laser radiation, for metallurgical coating, using CO2 laser. Various clads are obtained by changing laser parameters. Uniform surface clad, for bio implant purposes, without surface defect can be achieved. The surface of clad area is characterized by different methods like surface hardness, light microscopy for microstructure study and elemental analysis for composition test.
