This paper presents the design of Single phase five-level modular multilevel cascaded inverter based on double-star chopper-cells, which is intended for grid connection to medium-voltage power systems without using line-frequency transformers. Different modulation methods have been proposed for Modular multilevel inverter and one of them is level-shifted PWM method (LS-PWM). In this paper a new Phase Disposition Pulse Width Modulation (PDPWM) method based on Selective Virtual Loop Mapping (SVLM) is used to achieve dynamic capacitor voltage balance without the help of an extra compensation signal. Simulation has been carried out using Matlab/Simulink and the performance is verified based on Total Harmonic Distortion.
