Title

Structural Studies of Divalent Transition metal Cobalt(II) Complexes with Tetradentate hydroxamic acid Ligand

Abstract

The Schiff base ligand 1,3-bis (2-imino benzohydroxamic acid)- p-bromo benzoyl acetone was synthesized by the condensation of p-bromobenzyl acetone and 2-amino-benzhydroxamic acid in ethanolic medium at room temperature. The ligand molecule behaves as bi-anionic tetra dentate ligand. The general molecular formulae of the complexes have been found to be [Co(L) (B)2] where L=ligand and B=bases such as water, ammonia phenyl-isocyanide, quinoline and pyridine. The first band obtained in the range of 14750-15450 cm-1 has been found to be broad and unsymmetrical due to Jahn. Teller distortion. The first transition takes place between 4T1g (F) → 4T2g (F) (4Eg + 4B2g). The second band obtained in the range of 22150-22650 cm-1 is sharp; and symmetrical due to 4T1g (F) → 4T1g (P) transition indicating Octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The values of electrical conductance for Cobalt (II) complexes have been found to be in the range of 10 -18, indicating non-electrolyte nature of the complexes. The values of magnetic moments for the Cobalt (II) complexes have been found to be 4.60-4.98 BM, supporting octahedral nature of the complexes. Thus, on the basis of elemental analysis of the ligand and the complexes, measurement of electrical conductance, magnetic moment and electronic transition of the complexes and I.R. spectra of the ligand and the complexes, it has been suggested octahedral geometry.
