Title

Hell of racial prejudice unraveled in Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird”

Abstract

Racial prejudice is a categorical and unjustified generalization and evaluation made by certain individuals about other individuals without knowing them well. To Kill a Mockingbird is preoccupied with discussions of prejudice in general, and racism in particular. Conflicts over racism provide the impetus for several of the novel's most famous moments. The two tragic deaths in the story are the result of racial conflict. This article tries to unravel naive and moralistic picture of racial prejudice on one level. Racist white people are evil, while non-racist white people are wonderful. Atticus jeopardizes his reputation, his standing in the community, and ultimately the safety of his children on the grounds that he is not prejudiced, and hence a good person. The focus of this article is not only on moral level, but also from a perspective standpoint. According to the story, racism exists between educated, financially secure, moral white people and stupid, dirt poor, cruel white people. The novel rarely gives black characters a chance to speak on the subject of racism. When they do communicate, it is almost exclusively in terms of gratitude for the town's nice white people, not of anger, frustration, resistance, or hatred toward the system of racism.
