Title

A review study on various slags as partial replacement material for river sand in concrete

Abstract

Growing Environmental awareness, as well as strict regulations on managing industrial waste are resulting into research in properties of industrial waste and finding solutions on using its valuable component parts so that those might be used as secondary raw material in other industrial branches. River sand has been the conventional fine aggregate component used in mortars and concrete. Owing to the restrictions imposed by Ministry of Environment and non-availability or shortage of river sand, there is a need to find the new alternative material to replace the river sand, such that excess river erosion and harm to environment is prevented. Utilization of industrial slags in concrete compensates the lack of natural resources, solving the disposal problem of waste and to find alternative technique to safeguard the nature. There are a number of slags (Copper, Iron, Steel) used as partial replacement of fine aggregate. Different physical and mechanical properties of slags, which can be used, have been reviewed and comparisons are made between them. It can be observed that the concrete where sand is replaced by Copper slag, Iron slag, Steel slag, the compressive strength increases and also its durability, density and split tensile strength increases.
