Ayurveda is an indigenous medical system in India dating back to thousands of years. To be precise Ayurvedic knowledge deals with life or longevity. Dating from its evolution to the present age, Ayurveda underwent numerous changes though at a sluggish rate. This essay deals with the influence of Western Medicine over Ayurveda. The scholars who have worked on this topic estimates the levels of changes Ayurveda went through, postulating that Ayurveda faced three kind of threats in the form of British colonialism and dominance of allopathic medicine, its challenge to modernize to be a strong contender of Western Medicine and Ayurveda’s diaspora into the world beyond the boundaries of South Asia. No doubt Ayurveda changed with the coming of Western Medicine but it also has maintained its significance till date.
