E-GOVERNANCE IN INDIA: PROSPECTS, ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

Abstract

Welfare of the citizens is the primary aim of every Government. Every Government performs their function with the aim of achieving this primary objective. In 21st Century the traditional Governance approaches have failed to meet the changing environment in addressing the needs and wants of the citizens. It is a challenging task for the Government of a country like India, which is the second largest populated country in the world, to perform its governance function effectively and efficiently. With the revolution of Information and Communication Technology the Government could able to change the structure of its governing function. The concept of E-Governance was originated with the help of information and communication technology (ICT), which brings the Government and the citizens more closely. By implementing E- Governance the government could able to create speedy, timely and transparent delivery of services to its citizens and stakeholders. Through E-Governance our country could able to eliminate the governance gap existing in our country. To make the proper use of e-governance program and to enjoy its benefits, various e-governance projects were formulated and implemented by the Government at the national, state as well as regional level. These projects not only helped to bring the Government and citizen more closely but also helped to strengthen the democratic structure of our country to a great extent. In this paper we discuss about the prospects, scope and challenges of e-governance in India and we also discuss about the important e-governance projects launched in India.
