This article is a small contribution towards understanding the place of religion in modern India and nature of secularism. Religion is an almost universal institution in human society it is found in all societies, past and present. All the preliterate societies known to us have religion. Religion goes back to the beginning of the culture itself. There is no primitive society without religion. Religion plays an important role in the economic, demographic, married and sexual behavior of all individual and families. India is a land of diversities. This diversity is also visible in the spheres of religion. The major religious of India are Hinduism (major religion), Islam (largest minority religion), Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, India is a land where people of different religions and culture live in harmony. This harmony is seen in the celebration of festivals. The message of love and brother hood is expressed buy all the religions and cultures of India. Religion, as we understand the term implies a relationship not merely between man and man but also between man and some higher power. (Macluver and Page) Here we can say that mare than 80% of the Indian population believes in Hinduism, 14% believes in Islam Further, 2% of the population consists of christens and Sikhs. Such as Buddhism, Jainism, Atheism, and other beliefs, which comprise of 1% of the population.
