Dropout is a universal phenomenon of education system in India, spread over all levels of education, in all parts of the country and across all socio-economic groups of population. Adolescence, being a transition phase with risks as well as myriad opportunities makes the age-group of 10-19 years challenged to experience education causing them to drop out from schools eventually. Keeping the above context in perspective, the present paper tries to examine the factors that contribute to dropping out by the adolescent children at the upper primary, secondary and senior secondary levels. Various available literatures on the causal effect relationship of the dropout phenomena among the adolescents in India has been reviewed synoptically and attempted to explore the research gaps and scopes for further studies. The main aim of this paper is to shed some comprehensive interest on the problem of school dropout among adolescents and secondary level education from the ever-growing emphasis on primary education.
