Title

Sustainable Development And Gender Equality- An Overview

Authors

Abstract

The topic of sustainable development is almost universally debated today. It is a well-known fact that there can be no sustainable development without gender equality. Thus, gender equality is a prerequisite for any country to achieve sustainable development. Until now, a number of studies have indicated that gender inequalities impose high economic costs that contribute to social inequalities and environmental degradation throughout the globe. It is nearly impossible for any society to survive if any of its groups are subject to inequality or discrimination. In addition, environmental degradation and socioeconomic disparities cannot be reduced without addressing gender disparities. Women have always played a significant role in achieving sustainable development by embracing environmental challenges, and continue to be among the most ardent advocates for protecting the planet and its inhabitants. As they are more likely to be the primary meal providers, primary caregivers, and, particularly in the Global South, the predominate food producers, it is believed that women have a better understanding of and affinity with the environment. Therefore, women's empowerment is necessary for eradicating poverty, and alleviating poverty is essential for sustainable development. In this academic endeavor, the researcher has sought to establish a connection between gender equality and sustainable development. Several gender-related issues that impact sustainable development have also been presented. In addition, an effort has been made to elaborate on the role of law in promoting gender equality in order to achieve sustainable development. And finally, the researcher has attempted to provide an account of the enforcement of the legislative provisions as well as some suggested measures that India can adopt to achieve sustainable development by promoting gender equality.
