Title

Interplay of Patriarchy and Capitalism: Women Workers in the Tea Estates of Assam

Abstract

The present study while trying to study the work and family life of women workers finds the intersection of patriarchy and capitalism in their lives. Women workers constitute around 50% of the workforce and they play important role in the production of tea. But women workers in the plantation industry however do not enjoy equal rights and privileges as men. There is a clearly defined hierarchy in the plantation industry and women workers are never promoted to higher positions. Although the wages of men and women workers are equal today still there is unequal opportunity in occupation. The trade unions also do not address women's issues. Even in the patriarchal family they are verbally and physically abused by their alcoholic husbands. They also do not play important role in decision-making in families. The women workers are illiterate and thus they are ignorant, meek, and submissive. Thus in this present paper, we will be able to see the interplay of patriarchy and capitalism in the lives of the women workers in the tea estates of Assam.
