Title

Estimating the Live Storage Capacity of the Ukai Reservoir from 1992 to 2001 through Satellite Remote Sensing

Abstract

Reservoir capacity assessment is crucial for monitoring reservoir health and optimizing its operation. Assessing the capacity consecutively provides valuable insights into sediment distribution across different levels. In this study, we conducted a capacity assessment of the Ukai reservoir in India using satellite remote sensing. We analysed the sediment distribution pattern between 1992 and 2001. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was utilized to identify the reservoir's water spread area. The live storage capacities of the Ukai reservoir were computed for 1992 and 2001, revealing an increase of 126.45 x 106 m3. Over the nine-year period (1992-2001), the contour area near the 86.66 m elevation expanded by 30 km2. Monitoring and comprehending the deposition pattern of the reservoir can aid in more effective reservoir management to counteract sedimentation.
