Title

Studies on Prevalence of Breast cancer in Guntur, Krishna and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

Background:Breast cancer places a heavy burden on the Andhra Pradesh especially Guntur district people healthcare system, but information about the actual number of women living with breast cancer and their current or future health service needs is limited. We used existing population-based data and innovative statistical methods to address this critical research question in a well-defined geographic region. The aim of the study is to determine if any potential interactions or synergy exist between organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides exposure, breast cancer risk and the established risk factors for breast cancer in women. Methods:In the present study, 300 cases of various female breast cancer complaints were selected. Of these 300 cases included in the study, 96 were selected for the year 2008, 87 from 2009 and 117 from the years 2010 and 2011 from the Guntur Government General Hospital and the Bommidala Cancer Institute, Pedakakani, Guntur. Approval was obtained for the recruitment of patients with various breast cancer complaints, the collection of information through a questionnaire and their answers were noted and the data were analysed by using statistical methods. Results:The women exposed to chemicals in agricultural fields and during household purpose have increased risk of breast cancer than the unexposed group (p = 0.013 and p = 0.027 respectively). There was a significant difference between the disease states where the chemical was used on animals and crops by the patients themselves (p = 0.023 and p = 0.040 respectively). However, no difference was found if the patients had washed, exposed clothing (p = 0.093) worn on crop farms treatment or exposed to chemicals at the time of house sprayin (p = 0.453).Conclusions:Pesticides production and indiscriminate application for agricultural and non-agricultural purposes have resulted in the increased pollution of air, soil, ground and surface water. Various classes of pesticides like organochlorines and organophosphates, carbamates, synthetic pyrethroid etc., have been used in agriculture, causing health problems viz; breast cancer, a complex disease with many etiological contributors from both nature and nurture.
