Transforming Textiles: Towards a Sustainable Future - A Comprehensive Review of Eco-Conscious Innovations, Practices, and Consumer Trends in the Textile Industry

Abstract

This comprehensive review paper examines the exponential growth of the textile industry over the past 25 years and its consequential environmental impacts, including excessive water usage, chemical application, and alarming textile waste generation. It delves into sustainable practices encompassing materials, manufacturing methods, supply chains, consumer behavior, and fashion trends. Emphasizing eco-friendly materials, innovative manufacturing techniques like Genetic Programming and Green Manufacturing, and the significance of supply chain sustainability, the paper explores the evolving consumer mindset, particularly among younger demographics influenced by sustainability-focused influencers. It highlights the emergence of ethical consumers in developing nations and advocates for a shift away from fast fashion towards circular fashion models like slow fashion. The paper also discusses initiatives such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as a means to hold manufacturers accountable for product lifecycles and promote sustainability within the industry. Overall, this review underscores the industry's transformation towards a sustainable future, aligning economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.
