Title

Case study: Reduction in manufacturing lead time using lean tools in cable industries

Abstract

Small Scale industries play a key role in the industrial economy all over the globe. They contribute significantly to economic growth, innovation, and employment generation. Globalization, quick technological changes, and bigger competitive pressure are having a major impact on small scale industries around the globe. Small scale industries need to upgrade their professional organization methods to reach financial, social and environmental improvement without large investments or extensive changes. Most of the small scale industries are unaware about the lean manufacturing tools. The main aim of this is the implementation of ‘Lean tools’ in the small scale industry to enhance the productivity, safety, efficiency through effective place management. [1] Purpose- The purpose of this paper is to understand the implementation of lean tools like SMED, 5s and also with the help of workplace rearrangement, material movement optimization in cable manufacturing industries to know how it is more productive and efficient. Design/Methodology/Approach- The methodologies used in the cable manufacturing industries are SMED in wire drawing machine, 5s workplace rearrangement, material movement optimization to reduce lead time in different area in the industry. Findings- The literature reveal that implementation of lean tools are very much important in cable industries. While implementing SMED in wire drawing machine it was found that it reduces lead time by 22.22%. By optimizing the plant layout and workplace rearrangement it affects the lead time and financial benefit significantly. Value- This literature provide value to students, researcher and practitioners of lean tools by providing insight into the implementation of lean tools in cable manufacturing industries and helps them to achieve a successful implementation in their work.

Key Words

Keywords- 5S, SMED, plant layout optimization, workplace rearrangement, lead time etc.
