E-waste comprises discarded electronic appliances. E-waste contains hazardous constituents that may negatively impact the environment and affect human health if not properly managed. E-waste also contains valuable materials that have an economic value when recycled. Unfortunately, the majority of e-waste is recycled in the unregulated informal sector and results in significant risk for toxic exposures to the recyclers, who are frequently women and children. E-waste recycling has become a hotly debated global issue. Most developed countries have in place legislation mandating electronic manufacturers and importers to take-back used electronic products.
