Title

Mathematical Model for Dissimilar Metal Spot Welds using RSM

Abstract

Various steel grades are commonly used in a wide range of structural applications, presenting a formidable challenge in the creation of distinct welded joints, especially for lightweight vehicle body structures. This research aims to utilize Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) for connecting thin sheets of mild steel (MS) and alloy stainless steel (ASS 304), each with a thickness of 1.0 mm. The experimental approach involves adjusting critical process parameters such as weld current, weld time, and weld force, employing the Central Composite Design (CCD) methodology. This paper empirically investigates the RSW process for dissimilar sheets, emphasizing the influence of weld current, weld cycle, and weld force on the weld strength of resistance spot-welded joints, utilizing Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Using regression analysis, a mathematical model is formulated to illustrate the relationship between tensile-shear strength and process parameters, resulting in a derived closed-form equation. The results suggest an increase in weld strength with higher weld current and weld cycle, while a decrease in weld force is associated with a reduction in weld strength.

Key Words

Resistance spot welding; dissimilar metal sheets (MS, ASS 304), tensile-shear strength response, surface methodology.
