The rapid growth of urban areas and the corresponding rise in private vehicle ownership has led to a significant increase in air pollution levels. This research paper aims to examine the increasing problem of air pollution in metropolitan cities in India, specifically focusing on the role of automobile dependence. This paper analyzes the factors contributing to automobile dependence, explores the environmental consequences of this dependence on air pollution, and suggests potential strategies to tackle the issue. A combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, including literature review, data analysis, and case studies is used throughout the paper to provide a comprehensive overview of the problem and potential solutions. The aim is to contribute to the existing knowledge on the detrimental effects of automobile dependence and rising air pollution in metropolitan cities of India. By exploring the factors contributing to this issue and suggesting potential strategies, this study seeks to assist policymakers, urban planners, and researchers in formulating effective policies and interventions to improve air quality and reduce automobile dependence in Indian cities.
