Title

Effect of Column size, shape and orientation on Seismic performance of RC Building

Abstract

Lateral loads play the governing role in analysis and design of tall RCC buildings. The stiffness playing governing role in analysis and design of structure in tall buildings when subjected to lateral loads. Moment resisting frame is a structural system which is capable of carrying the lateral loads in low to mid-rise buildings. It carries the lateral loads by combined axial-shear-bending action of beams and columns. Based on strong column- weak beam design concept, columns should be stiff compared to beams to prevent shear mode of deformation of the structure. Selection of appropriate shape, size and orientation for columns in building (especially rectangular plan building) are the main factors which control the overall stiffness of the building structure. Paying attention on those parameters causes the structure to be stiff and deform in flexural mode while subjected to lateral loads. In this paper attempt has been made to find out the effect of column shape, size and orientation of rectangular columns in building plan on overall stiffness and seismic response of building subjected to ground shaking. A G+14 storey RC building has modeled in ETABS software with different column shapes (square shape and rectangular shape), column size (varying sectional area across the building height) and column orientation to find out the effect of each one on stiffness and seismic response of building. The analytical result of each model has compared in terms of Base Shear, Top Storey Displacement, Storey Drift and Time Period.
