In a MANET architecture, devices can move independently in any direction and therefore changes their links to other devices frequently. These protocols follow the reactive routing protocols such as AODV, DSR etc. to build and maintain their routes to the destination node. Routing information stored in these nodes gets stale in short duration of time since nodes move to other locations. Such an information needs to be updated on a regular interval of time. Route maintenance requires the broadcasting of RERR packets in the network. This process tends to create overhead on the nodes and uses more energy also. This paper reviews the various routing techniques that focus on the backup routing for route maintenance.
