Title

An Investigation on Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Abstract

A composite can be named as hybrid, if at least two types of fibers are rationally combined in a common matrix to create a composite that derives benefits from each and every of the individual fibers. The aim is to study the mechanical properties i.e. split-tensile strength, compressive strength, flexure strength on hybrid effect between steel fiber (SF) and chopped carbon fiber (CF). The test on Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (HFRC) is to be explored at volume fraction of SF 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and of CF 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% by the volume of cement with reinforcement and without reinforcement. For this study, 60 cubes of 150mm, 60 cylinders of 150mm diameter and 300mm height, twenty beams of different combination of SF and CF having cross-section 150mm x 150mm x 700mm (as per IS:516) will be casted of M25 grade of concrete. The testing of these beams will be carried out under two-point loading system. After testing, effect of different combination and the optimized composition will be concluded. The testing results shows that the optimum hybrid combination of 1% SF and 0.3% CF gives the optimized response in terms of Split-Tensile Strength while hybrid combination of 1.5% SF and 0.3% CF gives the optimized response in terms of Compressive Strength. The first cracking load and the ultimate load was increased by 29.23% and 15.86% respectively for hybrid combination of 1% SF and 0.3% CF. The flexural strength of the hybrid fiber reinforced concrete was more than that of the conventional concrete.
