Title

Torrefaction process for conversion of Biomass into usable energy: A review

Abstract

As the developing country the population is increasing day by day with increasing the primary fuels requirements. There is a dire need of an alternative to the present fuel. In such times we should look towards other reliable and easily accessible sources. Biomass is one such source of energy which through very simple process gives us a large amount of energy with comparatively less emission of greenhouse gases. Biomass is the only source of energy that stores carbon into its structure and releases back into the environment upon the use. Uses of biomass for different application results into various operational, environmental, financial and even logistic issues. Biomass Torrefaction is gaining attention as an important preprocessing step to improve the quality of biomass in terms of physical properties and chemical composition. Torrefaction is a slow heating of biomass in an inert or reduced environment to a maximum temperature of approximately 300°C. Torrefaction can also be defined as a group of products resulting from the partially controlled and isothermal pyrolysis of biomass occurring in a temperature range of 200–320℃. Torrefied biomass provides alternative source of coal in the future for all coal based plants by replacing carbon neutral energy dense torrefied pallets.
