Title

HYDROGEOLOGICAL SETTING AND STATUS OF WATER TABLE IN BOUDH DISTRICT OF ODISHA, INDIA

Abstract

Hydrogeological setting of an area is described with respect to the nature and disposition of subsurface geological features followed by the type of aquifer system and occurrence of groundwater. Systematic well inventory studies and its significance in the evaluation of water table configuration, groundwater flow direction and also water table fluctuation from pre-monsoon to post-monsoon periods have been dealt with. Depending upon water bearing and water yielding properties, the rock formations in the study area are broadly divided into following two units.1. Consolidated formations.2. Unconsolidated formations. The depth to water table values depend on several factors like rainfall, topography drainage characteristics, lithology, water bearing and water yielding properties of the rocks, as also land use. A total of 97 no. of key wells were monitored during pre-monsoon (May/June) and post monsoon (Nov/Dec) period. During the hydro geological investigation in any area, well inventory studies are most essential and forms an integral part of the study which enable us to understand the nature of the aquifer and to find out characteristics of groundwater in the study area. The various data collected from dug wells during the well inventory includes - location, diameter and depth of wells, depth to water table during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon and use of groundwater etc. In course of the present study, 97 dug wells at different locations have been observed (Fig.5) and their details are presented in Table 1. Water levels were recorded during pre-monsoon (April-May) and post-monsoon (September) periods in 2018. The depth to water table (both pre and post-monsoon) and the annual fluctuation of water table have been assessed between two successive years. The groundwater level fluctuation reflects the net change of storage resulting from the interaction of two components (recharge and discharge). The study and interpretation of water level fluctuation thus forms an integral part of the study of groundwater storage.
