Title

THE KEY CONTRIBUTORS TO THE GROWTH OF ONLINE GROCERY SEGMENT OF ECOMMERCE

Abstract

The grocery business in India is truly one of a kind. There is a huge diversity in the customers and the distribution models are also very different than that in most other western countries. There is large spectrum in the grocery business channels which operate across mom and pop stores, ranging from giant superstores to online grocery stores. Despite all these channels, over the years, most of India’s grocery business has been happening through unorganized sector, which primarily comprise of small stores, also called ‘kiranas’. It is estimated that there are over 12 million small stores in India, accounting for about 90% of India’s FMCG market. This long-lasting setup for grocery retail is getting disrupted now with the next phase of eCommerce growth. In any business, one sees a gradual move, where the business starts with the core and then shifts focus to the ancillaries. In eCommerce too, action started in the core or broader sector and is now shifting to niches like grocery. Online grocery is set to be the next battleground for eCommerce supremacy. This article looks at the eCommerce growth and the major factors leading to the growth of the online grocery segment with in eCommerce market space.
