Title

Evaluation of Pre-monsoon Groundwater Quality of Pallahara Block, Angul District, Odisha, India

Abstract

Groundwater quality plays a vital role in drinking and irrigation purposes of an area. In the present work, water quality indices of Pallahara block of Angul district, Odisha was determined on the basis of water quality parameters for the pre-monsoon period. Quality of groundwater influenced by various factors like lithology, excessive use of fertilisers etc. Altogether 110 number of water samples were collected during pre-monsoon season in 2017 and analysed for various physicochemical parameters like pH, Electrical conductivity, TDS, total hardness, total alkalinity, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, carbonate, bicarbonate, chlorides, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride etc. Suitability of groundwater for drinking purpose was evaluated by various schemes and water quality standards. Investigations show that the quality of groundwater of the study area is suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes except for some locations. Piper diagram, Gibb's diagram are plotted to estimate the facies and rock- water interaction of the study area respectively. The Piper diagram suggest that the groundwater of the area belongs to “alkaline earth exceeds alkalis” field and the chemical properties of the water is mixed type of calcium chloride and magnesium bicarbonate The area represents a mixed hydrogeochemical facies of Ca ̶ HCO3, Na ̶ HCO3, Ca ̶ Cl, Mg ̶ Cl types, out of which Ca-HCO3 is predominant.

Key Words
