Title

Assessment of Groundwater Quality for Drinking and Irrigation Purposes of Shalmala River Sub-Basin, Dharwad District, Karnataka

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the status of groundwater quality and its suitability for irrigation. Therefore, to achieve this goal around 45 groundwater samples are collected from the Shalmala river sub-basin Dharwad District, Karnataka. Physico-chemical parameters like hydrogen ion concentration (pH), electric conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), major cations like calcium (Ca⁺⁺), Magnesium (Mg⁺⁺), Sodium (Na⁺), Potassium (K⁺) and major anions like Chloride (Cl⁻), Sulphate (SO4⁻), Nitrate (NO3⁻), Carbonate (CO₃⁻⁻) and Bi-carbonate (HCO₃⁻) have been analyzed. Based on these analyses, the irrigational parameters like Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), United States Salinity Laboratory (USSL) classification, Sodium percentage (Na%), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Kelley’s Ratio (KR), Magnesium Ratio (MR), Soluble Sodium Percent (SSP), Permeability Index (PI) and Corrosivity Ratio (CR) can be determined. According to Richards (1954) the Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) will be at excellent category. As per USSL classification almost all samples representing C2S1 and C3S1 category. The Sodium percentage (Na%) of the study area represents excellent to permissible category. The permeability index (PI) of the study area represents the class I category. Hence almost all the groundwater samples from the study area are suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes.
