Title

METALLOANTIBIOTICS: PROMISING HEPATOPROTECTIVE AND ANTIOXIDATIVE AGENTS

Abstract

A Metalloantibiotic (MA) was synthesized by coupling Bismuth (V) with Chloramphenicol and Streptomycin. The MA was evaluated for its hepatoprotective and antioxidative potential. For this Balb/c mice were randomly divided into five groups (control infected (CI); control normal (CN); Chloramphenicol (CAP), Streptomycin (STP), and Metalloantibiotic (MA). All groups were infected with Streptococcus aureus (ATCC-33862) and administered for a period of 72h. Serum bilirubin, urea, and creatinine levels were traced to conclude any hepatic dysfunction. Liver antioxidants enzymes were also measured to ensure their hepatotoxic effects. Change in serum AST, ALT, ALP levels were significantly different (P<0.05) in experimental groups than control group. Hyperbilirubinaemia was observed in the mice administered with parent antibiotics with least values were observed in Metalloantibiotic (MA) administered group. Serum urea and creatinine levels were significantly elevated (P<0.05) in the test animals administered with antibiotics alone than Metalloantibiotic (MA). Liver antioxidants showed significant higher activity (P<0.05) in test groups than control with lowest change in activity in Metalloantibiotic (MA) group. It was concluded that Metalloantibiotic (MA) is hepatoprotective than parent antibiotics alone and is more antioxidant in nature.
