Mohanty’s decision to write about a clan of people on the very edge of civilization seems intriguing. The significance of his writing lies precisely in his ability to swim against the current, to go off the beaten track. His vision, directed towards the margins, gives it a real value. For this enabled him to articulate what the critic Satya P. Mohanty has called “the literary view from below” (Mohanty) . Paraja, the novel of epic dimension, is a lively document of a tribe in the most interior part of Laxmipur in Koraput in Orissa. A rich culture, orature, and mythology are the specialties of this clan. Theirs is a life in close proximity with nature. This paper aims at bringing out Mohanty’s achievement in showcasing the life affirming qualities of this traditional culture and to use this as a means of critiquing colonial modernity, and by doing so to endow the pre-colonial culture of the Paraja tribe with a positive significance.
