Title

STRATEGIES FOR PRESERVING PLANT BIODIVERSITY IN DEGRADING ECOSYSTEMS.

Authors

Abstract

Ecosystems are self sustained units comprising of biotic communities and abiotic components interacting with each other as a system. These interactions maintain the flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients among its components.Plant biodiversity refers to existance of variety of plant life on the earth. It includes flora from algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Plant biodiversity is necessary for maintaining ecological balance in ecosystems, survival of variety of animal species, climate control, soil conservation, food and many health benefits including medicines.Plant biodiversity is also a source of many wild genes useful in modern science of biotechnology.Human survival is ensured by the existing plant biodiversity.Plant biodiversity exist in all the ecosystems like terrestrial, aquatic including fresh and marine waters.Plant biodiversity plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem stability, providing ecosystem services, and supporting human and other species well-being. Plant biodiversity exist at many levels like species diversity, genetic diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem diversity.Species diversity refers to the number of different plant species within a particular area. Plant species vary widely in size, form, and function, and they occupy different ecological niches.Genetic diversity includes genetic variation within plant populations ensures adaptability to changing environments, pest and diseases resistance.Genetic diversity is critical for the survival of plant species in varied climates and ecosystem diversity refers to plants form the basis of most terrestrial ecosystems (forests, grasslands, wetlands, etc.) and play key roles in regulating climate, soil, and water cycles. A rich variety of plant species supports more diverse ecosystem and provides habitat for other organisms.
