The protection of human rights have been acknowledged to varying extents across time, but since the Second World War, the universality of human rights has been recognized by the United Nations as inherent in the very nature of human beings as a reflection of their common humanity. In recent years, there has been an upsurge of international attention on the role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the promotion and protection of human rights. This growing interest is explained by an increased understanding and recognition among states, international and nongovernmental organizations of the important role NHRIs play in promoting and protecting human rights. This article evaluates the extent of the promotion and protection of human rights by the local legislations that are directly or indirectly influenced by the UN conventions.
