Title

Women: A Victim of cyber crime

Abstract

This paper focuses upon the various types of cybercrimes that can be inflicted upon a women and its adverse effect. It also briefly examine upon the various laws such as the Information Technology Act (2000), the Criminal Amendment Act (2013) which exist to protect women from cyber crimes. The paper conclude with suggesting several remedies along with the options available to the victims to cybercrime and the changes required in legal system to effectively curb the rising spirits of cyber criminals and to counter the ever increasing cybercrime against women in India The Annual Report 2016 of the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3’s) reveals that among the countries, India ranks within top five for the maximum complaint of cyber crimes. Even though India is one among few countries to enact information technology act to prevent cyber crimes which somehow managed commercial crimes and economic crimes but, it miserably failed to protect women being victim of cyber crime Though crime against women is on a rise in all fields, cyber victimization of a women could be most traumatic experience. The reason for the increasing cyber crime rate against women is that most of the crimes goes unreported due to the hesitation and shyness of the victim and her fear of defamation of family’s name. The women are more vulnerable to the risk of cyber crime as the perpetrator’s identity remains unidentified and he may constantly threaten and blackmail the victim with different names and identities. Women still do not go to the police to complain against perpetrators so, the problem would be resolved only when the victimized woman immediately report back or even warn the abuser about taking strong actions. But they were discouraged by the peers, police and various Govt. agencies.
