Title

Effect Of Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation On The Performance Of Concrete

Abstract

Concrete is susceptible to deterioration, weathering, and cracks which results in its strength loss. In concrete micro cracks effect the structure’s strength as they slowly grow and at some point permit water to reach the steel reinforcement. This leads to corrosion and, eventually, reduces the serviceability of the structure. To avoid this situation, a mechanism called Microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is adopted as ecologically strength and durability improvement technique in old and new concrete structures by healing cracks without human intervention. It utilizes biochemical process of induced bacteria to improve engineering properties of concrete structures. The calcite precipitation process is enriched by inserting optimum concentration of urease positive bacteria and nutrients into the concrete during mixing of concrete. The bacterial precipitate is confirmed to be calcite (CaCO3) by SEM and XRD analyses. Alkali-resistant spore-forming bacteria related to the genus Bacillis found be produce continuous MICP.
