Hairs are the elongated, epidermal derivatives present in Class-Mammalia and used by them for variety of purposes like insulation, sexual selection, avoidance of predation etc. due to their commonality, hairs serve as important trace evidence during crime scene investigation. In the present study, hairs from 12 mammals (07 domestic and 05 wild) were studied using SEM for analysis of scale pattern and scale count. The hairs were obtained from tail to maintain uniformity. Analysis of hairs using SEM and GIMP software demonstrated that the scale count ranged between 1-3 in all the animals studied. Six animals had crenate (imbricate) scale pattern while four had elongated imbricate scale pattern. Scales were absent in ox while elephant hairs had dentate (coronal) scale pattern.
