Title

Performance And Emissions Analysis of Jatropha Biodiesel Blended With Diesel And Addition of Dimethyl Carbonate On VCR Engine

Abstract

Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy. The quantity of the fossil fuels has high demand and less production. The decrement in the quantity of the fossil fuels is one of the major concerns at present days. This problem leads us to search for other alternate source of energy i.e. alternate fuel. Jatrophacurcas oil is non-edible oil available from it and its presence thought the India. Jatrophacurcas seeds containing 27-40% oil, averaging 34.4%. The remaining press cake of Jatropha seeds after oil extraction could also be considered for energy production. The high viscosity of vegetable oils and the low volatility affect the atomization and spray pattern of fuel, leading to incomplete combustion and serve carbon deposits, injector chocking and piston ring sticking. And one of the methods used to reduce the viscosity is Tran-esterification. In the first step the test were conducted on four stroke single cylinder VCR diesel engine by using diesel as base line at constant speed 1500rpm. Further in the second step experimental investigations were carried out on the same engine with same operating parameters by using Jatropha biodiesel blended with diesel in different proportions such as B10, B20 and B30 at compression ratios CR16:1,CR17:1, CR18:1 to find out the performance parameters and emissions. Based on experimental results, it is found that the engine performance with blends improved to a certain extent, without any adverse effect in terms of performances and emissions. From that we conclude that B10 showed the better performance and emission compared to other blends of Jatropha biodiesel and base line. Finally in the third step we added 10ml and 15ml Dimethyl Carbonate additive to the optimum blend B10, it is found that the performance parameters are enhanced and emissions are reduced. In which implies the potentiality of Jatropha biodiesel as an alternate fuel for compression engine fuel.
