DNA barcoding is an advanced technique for molecular characterization, taxonomic identification, conservation and biodiversity study. It is a short sequence of the mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome Oxidas I gene. As the mitochondrial DNA is in maternal origin. The gene COI is highly conserved. This COI region is of high importance in the study of conservation and evolution. COI work as a tool for identification of the unknown species and classification of the species in the particular taxa. The specific sequence obtained after the amplification of the COI is called as the barcode. Various data depositories are available. FISH –BOL is an international centre for all fishes. It is a barcode library of reference sequence. DNA barcode of any unknown and known species can compare with this reference sequences retrieved from the NCBI and BOLD for species identification. The aim of this review article is to study the current status of the DNA barcoding of fish taxonomic and phylogenetic study of the fish. DNA barcoding technique plays major role in the phylogenetic diversity analysis. The taxonomic divergence between and within the species are explored by the phylogenetic diversity studies.
