Title

CLIMATE CHANGE: WATER RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT

Authors

Abstract

The history of human progress goes along with history of climate & environment. Environment is the main factor of determining growth & stability of civilization, however climate change has the potential to turn into a crisis for humankind as its multiple impacts can exacerbate the scarcity of innate resources, crop failure, starvation, famine, innutrition & disease. The ecological ethics had always been an inherent part of Indian religious percepts and philosophy, whereas Indian Constitution contains specific provisions for environment protection in the chapters of Directive Principles of State Policy & FDs. Article 48A, mandates that the State is under a Constitutional obligation to save & improve the environment & to safeguard forest and wild life. By 42nd Amendment in the Constitution, the Parliament with an object of sensitizing the citizens of their duty, incorporated Article 51A in the Constitution, inter alia, requiring a citizen to protect & improve natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers & wild life and to have a compassion for living creatures. There is need of policymakers, leaders, businesses & everyone else must come together to protect natural resources like natural habitat, air & water. The one of the natural resource; water is not only greatly affected by climate change, but is also a core component of climate. On the other hand, water supply is not only necessary to sustain human life, although it is also a key input to so many industries like manufacturing and cultivation. So conservation & best possible utilization is extremely important for the welfare of humanity and for economic or sustainable development. The thrust of the present study is that the climate change provoked water risks and its impact on Indian subcontinent and has been experiencing lowering of ground water, rise of sea level and saline of ocean water, melting of ice caps, floods, erosion, drought, diseases, migration etc., which has distressed the socio-economic foundation and livelihood of the people of this subcontinent. If we do not take action, the quality of our ecology, surroundings, atmosphere, livelihood & habitat of aquatic & wildlife will keep on deteriorate. We know that nation as well as the world could play a crucial role in many activities essential for coping with climate change. There is plenty we can do to reduce the negative impacts on the climate as well as there is need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround our earth.
