Title

A Juxtaposition of Private Label Brand and National Brand: Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Consumer Behavior

Abstract

During the last decade world has undergone many dramatic changes, one such change that changed the lifestyle of the human kind is the change in the shopping patterns of the consumers regarding various products and services. As per RASCI, 2011 Indian retail industry is around 16 trillion rupees. Due to the change in disposable income and purchasing power it is expected to grow 20 percent per annum. This paper is conceptual in nature. It throws light on the conceptual aspects of private label brand and national brand. Various identified major determinants of private label success were product quality, quality consistency, category retail sales, category gross margin, number of national manufacturers and national advertising per manufacturer. As per the outcome of blind taste test of manufacturer brand was least preferred as compared to private level brands, which further confirms that private label brand can offer the same or even better quality than national brand.
