Automated classification of skin diseases is a challenging task. The main motivation for developing automated or semi-automated skin disease classification systems stems from the fact that experts for skin diagnosis may not be readily available in case of medical urgencies, especially in remote places. Also, due to the similarity in appearance of skin diseases, developing automatic skin disease classification systems becomes a necessity. Moreover, automated systems could serve as a supportive opinion in the diagnosis process. Hence, several attempts are being made to develop computer-aided diagnosis systems to classify skin diseases using lesion images of the corresponding skin diseases. In this paper, we present an overview of such attempts elaborating on various image processing and machine learning techniques used in developing such systems. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of various mechanisms used in the classification of skin diseases.
