Partial discharge activity in power and distribution transformers leads to failure of insulation. Detection of partial discharges well in advance, help in protecting insulation failure. In this particular experimental work partial discharge inception and its extinction has been experimentally measured for pure and contaminated condition of paper oil insulation taking five paper layers wound on each limb of pigtail sample as the base case. Partial discharges have been measured for copper sulphide penetration into different layer of the sample. Each level of penetration and corresponding partial discharges measured are compared with the base case and the encahancement in partial discharges compared with the pure case have been reported. The result obtained have conclusively shown that partial discharges magnify when the contamination level increase gradually . This work can be used to measure partial discharges in actual transformer under loading condition and hence prevent failure of power transformer insulation.
